Morning Blend Video here

How do you suggest whittling down those MOUNTAINS OF PAPER on desks and covering practically every other surface?

  • Set up your SYSTEM
    • Make it simple, consistent and repeatable. The psychology of not having a clear system for purging is the first hurdle to overcome. A system makes your brain calm and clear – seriously!
    • I choose banker’s boxes for the system, I use it with my clients.
      • closeable, stackable, easy to come right back to it tomorrow
  • BOXES or bins labelled Trash, Recycle, Shred, File/Keep
    • Just Sort! Don’t File Or Shred
  • Set a TIMER for 10 minutes a day or knuckle down and do it all. I recommend the first option. It’s less intimidating
  • DUMP Trash & Recycle
  • WAIT to shred
    • Do it yourself later. I recommend a bottle of wine in one hand with the other hand shredding while binge watching your favorite show.
    • Office Depot/Max: does small batches on site, big batches are secured in-store, then shredded by Iron Mountain
    • Huge batches more than 35lbs take to Beacon Foundation. There are others but Beacon is my favorite.
  • Your Keep/File will soon be ALL that’s left
    • Do 10 minutes a day and you’ll be filed away in a jiffy!

Once things are manageable how do keep FILING simple?

  • KEEP IT SIMPLE
  • If all you need is a small file box and a handful of categories/files, then ok
  • If you want something more detailed, consider Freedom Filer: color coded with emailed reminders
  • Aggressively toss old documents, like taxes and utility bills
  • Box up archival stuff, out of your way, out of your space

Okay, so how do we keep the daily influx of MAIL under control?

  • SORT IT BEFORE YOU DROP IT!
  • Create your Sorting Station!
    • Wherever your current pile piles up:
    • Create your sorting station
    • Countertop position
    • Mounted to the end of the cabinet
    • on the Wall
    • inside the door of your cabinet where you keep your trash
  • On the way in
    • laundry/entry/garage
  • Office
    • small trash cans along the wall or under the desk
  • Label them!
  • Make them dump-able
