Jewelry can be a very personal thing. It’s a way to express our personality and style, it can be quite expensive and precious, family heirlooms, gifts or just fun and playful. It can also be a big, ugly, tangled mess!
I’m here to tell you that, whether you have a little jewelry or a lot, small jewelry or big and chunky, a lot of space or a little space, all out on display or discreetly tucked away, there is a jewelry storage option that’s right for YOU!

And THANK YOU to my friends at The Container Store for helping me out with props for my show!
Storage Types
- Display it where you can see it
- Table/dresser/countertop, wall mounted units, door mounted units. All shapes and sizes (fancy racks, ceramic tree branches, crystal kitty tails, etc.), available at almost every store you can imagine.
- Pros: It’s a pretty way to display your stuff if you don’t have a lot. (Or see below for artsy hacks.)
- Cons: We tend to add more racks, dishes, boxes and and and and and… It can get very cluttered, messy and your gems become buried in dust. (Oh, look, Grandma’s earrings have grown fur!)
- Boxes & Stacking
- The good ol’ fashioned jewelry box is a good option, if you want your jewelry out but covered. The Container Store has a cool, customized, felt-lined, stackable system that’s very pretty on a dresser or tucked in a drawer. If you need a jewelry box on steroids, maybe a floor-based jewelry cabinet or wall-mounted option is good for you.
- Drawer Trays
- My friend Mj is a Gem Show junkie. She uses stackable, modular, nesting trays with interior compartments designed for rings, watches, necklaces, so you can customize for your personal stash.
- Variations on this theme are acrylic bins with adjustable dividers or office/kitchen drawer organizers.
- Personally, I don’t have much drawer space so I put dividers inside shallow baskets on a couple shelves. Very elegant and space saving.
- Travel
- There are travel option for all types and sizes of baubles. (I need a BIG one for my BIG jewelry!)

Projects: for all of you crafty people out there
- Tie racks, chain or lace draped on a wall, a lampshade, an old shutter – all of these can be made into earring storage especially.
- Punched tin sheets are cool industrial/retro/modern (I know it sounds contradictory, but trust me) make a very cool wall unit, hung with ribbon or mounted. (I made a 6 ft tall installation for my client Sue’s necklaces that was aaaaaawsome!)
- Adapt a personal item for your needs. My Great Uncle’s antique steel tool box looks quirky and unique, lined with puffy drawer liner to store my play jewels, super chunky stuff.
- I’m currently designing a full-wall installation for my client Lisa that I’m calling an “Accessories Bar.” Shabby chic style with drawers, a big mirror, and wall mounted shutters to hang jewelry, sunglasses, and her bedazzled Harley headbands!
- Short of ideas? There are literally millions of ideas on the intertoobs, so here’s my Pinterest Page on the subject to get you started.
