Oh, my gosh, grandbaby Rowan John is born! My Guy’s amazing daughter and son-in-law brought him into the world last week, officially making us GRANDPARENTS and we are so excited!

You may remember my blog about hosting the baby shower, The Ass-Kicking Power of a Deadline, a few short months ago and we’ve been counting the minutes ever since. There have been parties and appointments and pondering over names and general baby preparedness – including creating the perfect nursery to welcome him home.

All this has me thinking about how much time, love and attention families put into crafting the perfect, thoughtful, welcoming nest for our little ones. We want them to enter the world knowing how much they are valued, that they are safe and nourished, that they can accomplish anything. A nursery is bursting at the seams with hope and dreams. It’s a promise, like a love letter with four walls.

Not one thing is allowed into that sacred space that might tell Baby that they aren’t perfect and loved. Not. One. Thing.

So… when did that end? What happened along the way?

Why do we, as adults, so often live in an environment that is NOT full of hopes and dreams, support, encouragement and the promise that we are beautiful, strong, able to touch the stars and, most importantly, inherently lovable and loving – no matter what? When did we start letting in (by piles, by purchase, by gift and by slow influx, cemented in place by inertia) those messages that tell us that we are anything but Perfect Love in Human Form?

When was the last time you took an objective inventory of your home or workplace, of your children’s rooms, of your parents’ homes and asked yourself how it makes you/them feel? If it’s discouraging, frustrating or downright negative, or if you’ve just become used to the yucky or mediocre, I encourage you to take heart and take control.

Become the curator of your own life and treat your space with the same love for YOURSELF as you would that of a precious, new little person. Whatever twists and turns your life has taken, YOU deserve to feel LOVED and FULL OF PROMISE every day!

Being the person who loves, loves, loves to help make beautiful spaces for people, you can imagine what a treat it was for me during this whole wind-up-to-baby thing when Baby’s mom asked me to help with the nursery. Oh, my, oh, yes, oh, goody! So we Pinterested (verb?), I painted, put up a wall-sized latex mural (baby learned swear words in-vitro that day!), then added a border (because it wasn’t perfect enough) and, with all sweet baby bits that Mom and Dad chose and assembled with tender loving care, the nursery was perfect and READY FOR BABY. All we needed was the baby… and now we’ve got that too!

Congratulations, Mom & Dad – you did good! Welcome to the world, Rowan!
