Was anyone else raised with the be-nice-to-everyone-all-the-time (even-at-the-expense-of-your-own-happiness-and-well-being) message? Do you hear a voice in your head telling you to “be nice” when you’re about to set boundaries or say no to something that’s not good for you at work, at home or with friends?
Sad Fact:
Most of us do, especially women. The message is insidious, generational and hard as heck to break. Amirite or amirite?
Revolutionary Revelations:
You are a good person.
You can say “yes, absolutely yes, and yupperoo” to you.
You can say “no, nope and nuh-uh” to other people’s crap.
These are not mutually exclusive concepts!
Breaking the chain of crappy messaging takes time and practice. But it’s worth it – for ourselves and for those who are learning from us how to be. So repeat after me, “Nooooooooooooooooo.” Now didn’t that feel good?
A fun little bonus: If you want to practice a million ways to say “no” while dancing in your seat, Meghan Trainor is your trainer (below)…
